REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS IN PROF. E’S COURSES:

Ordinarily, lecture and discussion courses meet two or three times a week. This means that classes are much shorter (50 or 75 minutes), and you have less work to prepare for each class.

Classes at SVA, for good reasons, run on studio time. We meet only once a week for nearly three hours! This makes it a lot easier for you to schedule your studio courses, and your jobs! BUT, this means that each class meeting is a full week's work. You may have to prepare more than one topic each week. This will only work if you manage your study time just as you make time to work on your studio projects.

Regular attendance- Three cuts will result in being dropped from the course. The roll will be taken regularly, and attendance will be considered in calculating grades. Work missed due to excusable absence, as defined in the Student Handbook, must be made up. For an absence to be excused, just hand me a brief note explaining the situation. Remember, each class meeting is a full week's work, so any cuts can have a negative effect on your grade.

Lateness is not acceptable. Lateness of more than 10 minutes will be counted as ½ cut. As a minimum courtesy to your fellow students and the instructor, if you must enter the classroom after class has started, do so as quietly as possible and sit in the first empty seat. Never interrupt the class by walking across the front of the room. The door to the classroom may be closed if latecomers become distracting; those left outside will have to wait until class break to enter. If this happens on an exam day, you will miss the exam.

Participation and Preparation- Assigned reading for each class must be prepared in advance. The syllabus is keyed to the Reading Assignments sheet handed out on the first day. Your preparedness will be rated by the level of class participation and the quality of the discussion. To make your class prep easier, the assignments are broken up into smaller chunks as though the class met twice a week.

Examinations- Ordinarily, there will be one-hour 1/3- and 2/3-term exams given in class. Depending on the progress of the course, other assignments may be substituted. The final examination will be written during the final class period. Because the Final is two hours long, and you will have more experience in writing exams, it will count a bit more than the one-hour exams. Questions may be handed out in advance.

Outside Assignments- In addition to assigned reading in your textbooks, you will write a Museum Report. Other assignments may be suggested by current events such as a news item relevant to the course. Visits to appropriate websites will be suggested or assigned, possibly for a class report.Specific information is given in the syllabus for your class.
